Communities of Pride Houses

The Communities of Pride series is about manifesting in fabric concepts of inclusion within and acceptance for diverse LGBTQIA+ communities. The quilt is a pride flag that adds additional colors to the traditional rainbow pride flag to bring symbolic representation to marginalized persons within LGBTQIA+ communities who identify as people of color and/or transgender. This flag is created from 176 houses, which suggest communities of neighborhoods and individual families, and the acceptance needed in these spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals to live affirming lives. The tradition built into the quilt is the house blocks and that 60% of the quilt is made from thrifted fabrics and old clothes, including clothes from my brother, mother, and maternal grandfather, honoring the quilting traditions of making do and honoring family stories. The modern is the pride flag itself, and the advances in and progress still needed to achieve equity for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
