Pine Burr Study No. 2

The Pine Burr Study series is an exploration of utility. Study No. 2 was made from men’s clothing, mostly ties, but including material from several dress shirts and a couple pairs of pants. The triangles are sewn onto a sandwiched foundation consisting of scraps from two dress shirts and an old undershirt used as a batting.

The pine burr was popularized by Black quilters in the south and is the official state quilt of Alabama (the only state to have an official quilt). A pattern written by Loretta Pettway Bennett, a Gee’s Bend quilter, was used as a guide for understanding the process of constructing a pine burr quilt. The pattern is free and available on the Alabama Department of Archives and History website.
